James Miller

James Miller captures traces of movement, light, and shadow with acrylic paint on canvas in a process parallel to cameraless photography. Miller draws heavily from the history of photographic and light-based media in both method and aesthetics—translating the rhetoric of an additive light process to a subtractive color medium. In a manner of recording absence, the artist sublimates painterly mark-marking into vapor traces, harnessing the flow of sprayed pigment in a process analogous to darkroom exposure. Miller’s subtle treatment of color, mimetic renderings of light, and captured motion combine to produce uncanny effects.

James Miller (b. 1986; from Spokane, WA) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received his MFA from Yale University in 2014. Miller was recently included in group exhibitions at Anton Kern Gallery, New York; American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York; and Centre Pompidou, Paris. Other solo and group exhibitions include Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York (2022, 2019); Y2K Group, New York; Underdonk, Brooklyn; Soloway, Brooklyn; Essex Flowers, New York, NY; Mehoyas, New York; and Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, among others. Miller was a recipient of the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship in 2014-15, and currently serves as the Alex Katz Visiting Artist at The Cooper Union.
