James Miller captures traces of movement, light, and shadow with acrylic paint on canvas in a process parallel to cameraless photography. Miller draws heavily from the history of photographic and light-based media in both method and aesthetics—translating the rhetoric of an additive light process to a subtractive color medium. In a manner of recording absence, the artist sublimates painterly mark-marking into vapor traces, harnessing the flow of sprayed pigment in a process analogous to darkroom exposure. Miller’s subtle treatment of color, mimetic renderings of light, and captured motion combine to produce uncanny effects.

James Miller (b. 1986; from Spokane, WA) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He received his MFA from Yale University in 2014. Miller was recently included in group exhibitions at Anton Kern Gallery, New York; American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York; and Centre Pompidou, Paris. Other solo and group exhibitions include Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York (2022, 2019); Y2K Group, New York; Underdonk, Brooklyn; Soloway, Brooklyn; Essex Flowers, New York, NY; Mehoyas, New York; and Laguna Art Museum, Laguna Beach, among others. Miller was a recipient of the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship in 2014-15, and currently serves as the Alex Katz Visiting Artist at The Cooper Union.

Tunji Adeniyi-Jones

Tunji Adeniyi-Jones is a British-born, Nigerian artist whose painting practice grapples with West African mythologies, religion, and ceremonies through a diasporic lens, making images that produce a cultural and iconographic “third space” through which manifold expressions of identity can exist. As a result, Adeniyi-Jones’ floriated paintings often feature androgynous figures dancing through densely-patterned spaces. It is this amalgamation of African, African-diasporic, and European influences—medieval manuscript illustration, 20th century West African painting, the Harlem Renaissance—that informs the artist’s distinct approach to representation and abstraction.

Tunji Adeniyi-Jones (b. 1992, London, England) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He received an MFA in Painting & Printmaking from the Yale University School of Art and a BFA from the Ruskin School of Art at University of Oxford.

Recent solo exhibitions include Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, New York; White Cube, London, Paris, and Hong Kong; Morán Morán, Los Angeles; and Charleston, East Sussex, UK. He has been included in group exhibitions at Pond Society, Shanghai; Metropolitan Museum of Manila, Phillipines; Aïshti Foundation, Beirut; Gagosian, London; Dakar Biennale, Senegal; ICA Miami, Florida; Public Art Fund, New York; Morán Morán, Los Angeles; The Perimeter, London; Venus Over Manhattan, New York; and Deitch Projects, Los Angeles. Forthcoming exhibitions include the Nigerian National Pavillion at the 2024 Venice Biennale.

JOEL MESLER

Joel Mesler (born in Los Angeles in 1974) uses autobiography, humor, self-deprecation, and unexpected juxtapositions to illuminate universal themes. Childhood experiences inspire reflections on popular iconography, design, and the fluid, changing character of the painting process. Mesler has recently focused on the importance of acceptance, —as well as the cultural forms in which they become constellated. Mesler’s concerns are very much his own, and despite how silly their surfaces may seem at first, his paintings evoke deeper issues.

Joel unveils a truly exceptional mural created exclusively for The Surf Lodge in Montauk, NY. This remarkable artwork builds upon the captivating painting titled “You Deserve Great Things,” which achieved acclaim when it was auctioned at Christie’s in May of 2022 for nearly one million dollars. Mesler’s mural expands upon the essence of the original piece, showcasing his signature style characterized by vibrant colors, intricate details, and thought-provoking narratives. With this unique collaboration, The Surf Lodge becomes a canvas for Mesler’s artistic vision, offering guests an immersive experience that blends coastal charm with contemporary artistry. The project was conceived and produced by art advisor Randy Scott of Scott Art Inc., also the art curator at The Surf Lodge.

Joel Mesler had his very first exhibition at The Surf Lodge in 2016. Since then he has an extensive exhibition history that spans prestigious galleries and institutions across the globe. His captivating artworks have been showcased in solo and group exhibitions, solidifying his reputation as a prominent contemporary artist. Mesler’s exhibitions have taken place in notable art hubs such as Los Angeles, New York City, Zurich, London, and more. He has collaborated with renowned galleries including Gagosian Gallery, David Kordansky Gallery, LGDR, Galerie Eva Presenhuber, and Deitch Projects, among others. Joel lives and works in East Hampton, NY.

The mural will be on view at The Surf Lodge, 183 Edgemere Street, Montauk, NY from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend 2023.
